SF State Student Withdrawal

First, some exciting news! Students will now be able to initiate withdraw requests from their Student Center, eliminating the paper process and streamlining review by the required approvers. This enhancement was pursued in support of the newly updated Academic Senate Policy on Withdrawal from Courses.  Please review the new sections on the Registrar’s website that include information on the policy and instructions for students.

Here are some key highlights to keep in mind when advising students about the withdrawal process:

  • It is the student’s responsibility to drop or request to withdraw from a class.
  • It is important to remind students that they should continue to participate in their course(s) until they receive notification that their withdrawal request is approved.
  • From the fourth through the twelfth week of instruction, withdrawal from a course is permissible for serious and compelling reasons as defined/specified by the studentIt is not necessary for the student to provide documentation.
  • From the thirteenth week through the last week of instruction, students may only request to withdraw in cases, such as accident or serious illness, where the cause of withdrawal is due to circumstances clearly beyond the student's control. These requests require documentation
  • Students must submit their requests to withdraw no later than the last day of instruction for the term. If circumstances clearly beyond a student’s control prevent them from meeting this deadline, they may appeal for consideration (this was formerly referred to as retroactive withdrawal). More details about the appeals process can be found on the Registrar’s website under the appeals section. Please review this information as the process has changed.
  • Keep in mind that undergraduate students may withdraw from a maximum of 18 units.  Advisors now have the ability to review the courses and number of units applied to both the withdrawal and course repeat limits in the Advisor Center within Campus Solutions. The information can be found in the “other academic” pull down menu under “Withdrawals/Repeats”. Students also have access to this information within their Student Center.  View the instructions on accessing the withdrawal and course repeat units screen in the Student Center
  • Students on financial aidinternational students, and veterans all need to be mindful of the impact of withdrawing from courses. For specific questions, please direct students to the appropriate office.
