Did you know gators are surprisingly social creatures? Just like our Gators at SF State, wild gators exhibit complex social behaviors. They are far from solitary reptiles; they frequently gather in groups, basking in the sun or congregating near food sources. These social interactions, while different from human socialization, reveal their intelligence and adaptability to the environment.
Happy Fall 2024 Gators!
I hope all of you are off to an excellent start this semester. Please note, the goals of this student publication is to provide regular updates highlighting what your Division of Student Life team has accomplished for you, to announce upcoming engagement opportunities on campus, and to celebrate student accomplishments throughout the year. To learn more about your Division of Student Life and Dean of Students Office, please visit our website Division of Student Life (DSL) | Dean of Students (DOS) (sfsu.edu).
Campus Engagement: Years of research studying college student success teach us that it is critical for all students to invest is getting involved on campus and throughout your community to be successful in college. Remember, the resume that got you into college will not be competitive to aid you in securing future scholarships, internships, and jobs. To aid you in preparing for future professional opportunities and expand your learning outside of the classroom, I encourage each student to consider joining at least one organization related to your major, one organization focused on community service, and one student organization connected to personal interest or passion during your time at SF State. The good news is that all students have the ability to join a wide variety of student organizations as we have more than 200 registered organizations to select from!
Benefits to building your college resume include expanding your network by connecting with others professionally, culturally, politically, spiritually, religiously, academically, and more. The many diverse student organizations allow you the opportunity to gain a wide range of experiences outside of the classroom. Recognized student organizations host large events on campus, plan supplemental educational workshops, showcases, and fundraisers. They have access to reserving space on campus, fundraising, on-campus banking with UCorp and funding grants through Associated Students and more. To help you find an organization you may be interested in joining or to start a student organization, please visit our Student Activities Office in person or via website at Student Activities & Events | San Francisco State University (sfsu.edu).
Safety Consideration: As you develop your new routines based on classes, work, and personal health, I also want to remind you of services you have access to related to personal safety.
The University Police Department continues to offer our SafeWalk service program to assist campus community members with traveling around the campus community. You can call (415) 338-7200 to arrange for a SafeWalk, and you can find additional information at this link https://upd.sfsu.edu/safewalk. I want to also encourage all community members to care for each other and their mental well-being. For students needing additional support while transitioning to campus and the city, don't hesitate to contact University Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at (415) 338-2208. Here's a link to the CAPS website with additional information https://psyservs.sfsu.edu. We also encourage students to reach out to the Dean of Students Office (dos@sfsu.edu) and to Equity & Community Inclusion (equity@sfsu.edu) to connect with staff and administrators for support and resources. Finally, I strongly encourage everyone to be our partners in safety and security in the campus community and "if you see something, say something" by contacting UPD at (415) 338-2222 from a cell phone or calling 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency.
With these tips in mind, I hope all of you have an amazing fall semester and always remember, your division of student life is here to help you navigate your college experience. Let us know how we can help. Be well and best of luck this semester!
Dean Miguel

Public Safety Advisory Committee
The University Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) is a dedicated group committed to promoting safety across our campus and increasing awareness about safety conditions and programs among all members of the SF State community. The committee is comprised of faculty members, staff members appointment, a community member, an officer of the SF State University Police Department, and current students.
This committee serves as a bridge between the Division of Campus Safety and the campus community, providing a platform to share experiences, needs, and perspectives. By identifying current public safety concerns, the committee helps shape strategies to enhance safety on campus.
One of our valuable resources is the SafeWalk Program. Need a buddy to walk with? Have a late-night class? Simply call (415) 338-7200 and press '0' to schedule a SafeWalk.
Let's work together to create a safe and welcoming campus environment for everyone.
Mac Tappan, Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts - Inglewood, California
My name is Mac Tappan. I am a transfer student from Santa Monica College and West LA College, and I’m from Inglewood, California. I am majoring in BECA (Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts) with a minor in Video Game Studies. I chose SF State because of its beautiful location in the Bay Area, and I wanted something different from Southern California. I was especially excited to use the new building, Marcus Hall, as part of my major. This would give me hands-on experience with cameras and software used by industry professionals today.
I am grateful for my accomplishments as a student at SF State. I have become an Orientation Leader and a student assistant at the Black Unity Center, where I help Black students access resources. I started a radio show at KSFS called "Yung, Black, and Nerdy," where I share my experiences as a Black nerd. I also teach a class as part of the Experimental College, covering various topics I’m passionate about. Currently, I am teaching a class on Black science fiction and fantasy. Additionally, I attended the biannual Juneteenth symposium.
I am a proud member of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc., where I serve as president of my chapter. I also sit on the board of the National Pan-Hellenic Council on campus. I was nominated for a BECA award for video editing. Outside of school, I explore my interest in comedy and enjoy discovering interesting places in the city.
Hosna Zaman, Psychology - Vacaville, CA
My name is Hosna, and my hometown is Vacaville, CA. I’m an undergraduate student majoring in Psychology and am one of the Presidential Scholars here at SF State. Though it’s been exactly a year since I joined the SF State community, I’m happy to say that I’ve greatly immersed myself with the Gator spirit through my involvement and participation. My freshman year, I helped facilitate a day of service fair at Rosa Parks Elementary, participated in SF State’s first annual LeaderShape event, and joined the ambassador program through the Health Promotion & Wellness (HPW) center and earned a certification. I’m also involved in the Educational Opportunity Pathway Program (EOPP), SSS-Trio, and METRO Program.
I’m passionate about advancing health equity, excelling academically, and always finding new avenues to learn and grow as a person. In addition, every month, I volunteer with the California Academy of Sciences to help contribute to conservation efforts throughout the Bay Area.
This past year, I have been interning for a health-tech startup that helps enable elders and individuals with disabilities to sign up for affordable care through our platform, CareYaya. After coming across such a profound opportunity, which enabled me to get valuable experience as a public health ambassador, I decided to take it a step further and move up to becoming a caregiver.
The second semester of my freshman year, I got the amazing opportunity to work with one of the editors of Golden Gate Xpress (student news site of SF State) to publish an article about the caregiving crisis in San Francisco and showcase CareYaya. The CEO of our startup, Neal K. Shah, gave us his utmost kudos and shared this accomplishment through his platform. So far, I have over 300 hours of direct patient care experience through the various caregiving sessions that I’ve attended in the last several months. This past summer, I co-hosted a podcast for the Future of Caregiving with the head of our ambassador program, Nirvana Tari, and invited Dr. Yee-Melichar, who is the professor in PACE-Gerontology Program at SF State, to provide her insights on geriatrics.
With the current steppingstones that I’m taking, my goal is to become a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the future and be an advocate for mental health. This year, I’m one of the Mental Health Education Assistants at the Health Promotion & Wellness (HPW) center, and I can’t wait to see our fellow gators at all of our events and workshops. Go Gators
