Gator Tales - November 2023

Did you know that Alligators take care of their young, unlike most reptiles. For about two years female reptiles carry and look after their little Gators, making sure they are safe and well-fed. Though they are seen as ferocious predators, they are known to be very nurturing toward their offspring. Let us continue to look after each other and support new Gators as they navigate the transition to SF State!

Hello SF State Student Body!

I hope all of you are successfully navigating both academic and personal goals thus far this semester. More importantly, I hope all of you are present in your experience here at SF State, reflecting on who you are becoming, and challenging yourself to be better than you were yesterday. On behalf of the Division of Student Life and Dean of Students team, let me congratulate each of you on transitioning to campus, taking mid-term exams and engaging throughout our global community. We believe in you, and we are always ready to support your journey!

Since last month, I am excited to share a few accomplishments our team has been able to secure in partnership with many of your peers. The first update is focused on new space we were able to create in Student Services Building room 404. This space will be reservable for student clubs and organizations to meet, plan, and connect with other student leaders. The official opening will be in early November, and we will host an open house early Spring semester to celebrate the new space. We also invite students to consider helping us name the new space. We are excited for this to become a dynamic flexible space for both clubs and any student to use in the weeks ahead. This transition will also allow the SET (Student Engagement and Transition) team to create reservable space for student clubs and organizations in the Student Life Event Center (Annex I) available starting in January. For more information, please visit Student Activities & Events.

A second update I hope you will be excited to learn about is the expansion of the SF State Associated Students Food Pantry Program and Gator Groceries. Associated Students Food Pantry started in 2017 as a "Pop-up" Food Pantry. This service was located in the Student Events Annex I. Lessons learned at the end of their first year feeding 300 students with fresh, free groceries each week included seeing the need for not only more fresh and nutritious groceries, but also a need for emergency snacks that might not constitute a full meal.  This experience inspired your Associated Students leaders to create a new accessible and permanent location in the Rec and Dining area of the Cesar Chavez Student Center. Associated Students now differentiate between these services by designing Gator Groceries to be an emergency snack program that is an extension of the Food Pantry Services. The Food Pantry is the main distribution of fresh produce and canned goods.  All of this food comes from a wonderful partnership with the SF/Marin Food Bank and Associated Students.

Gator Groceries is a program designed for students to repeatedly use throughout the year. Many of our students rely on this program weekly, and your use of these resources will only help us continue to grow the program.

One last exciting update we want to share is an opportunity to celebrate our very own Vice President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management, Dr. Jamillah Moore, who was recently… named one of the Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business by San Francisco Business Times. VP Moore was honored on Oct 3rd in San Francisco at an event that showcased the leadership, community service, and mentorship that women have to change the world. Dr. Moore joined the esteemed list of SF State winners including President Mahoney (2020) and Provost Sueyoshi (2022).

Alright good people, that is all I have to update you on for now. I will leave you with the following thoughts: Stay focused. Keep going. Do not give up. Remember why you started, and let that fuel you!

Dylan Gillespie (He/Him) - Ventura, CA

Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences major and a double minor in Special Education and Early Childhood Education

Hello All! Currently, at such a young age I am a third year at SF State graduating a year early while majoring in Speech Language and Hearing Sciences with double minoring in Special Education and Early Childhood Development!  One of the main reasons for attending SF State was to explore a diverse and inclusive environment that was made for each and every individual out there without doubt! Here I have accomplished a balance of being a full-time student studying their major and minor classes at only eighteen years old, while also upholding three occupations two on-campus where I am constantly supporting perspective and transfer students with tours, general information, and compatibility at Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment. The other support I provide on campus is serving as a First Year Experience Peer Mentor, collaborating with faculty, students, and professors to create the absolute best environment for learning. My plans for the future are to continue my graduate studies within the Speech Pathology department and further my teaching clinically and educationally in schools, especially due to the vast diversity, inclusiveness, and compatibility this campus offers, while always searching the vast city for fun events each week! Go Gators!

Isabella Ceja (she/her) - Sacramento, CA

Public Health major and a Health Education minor

My name is Isabella, and I’m a Public Health major and Health Education minor. The Public Health program at SF State is a community I'm proud to become a part of within my four years at SF State. Learning about population health and the education of communities has been an enriching experience that I have extended into my work within First Year Experience (FYE). As an FYE peer mentor, working with professors in paired first-year courses has been rewarding in making the transition to college a more supportive and successful environment for first-year students. Advocating for my peers on campus has taught me how to act as a resource for others and was a great way to practice community and outreach skills learned within our public health program. I plan to continue advocacy work after graduating this year in the spring semester as a health educator for disadvantaged communities.

I chose SF State because of its diversity and inclusion. As a mixed-race individual, seeking an environment that was culturally enriching and welcoming was meaningful for me, and I’m happy to attend this university where the faculty and students are exceptional people. I’m also glad to study health sciences and continue to build experiences within this beautiful and unique city.

Kylie Schneider (she/her) - Oakley, CA

Master's in Communication Studies

I graduated from SFSU in May 2022 with a BA in Communication Studies and a minor in Marketing. I plan to graduate with a MA in Communication Studies in May 2024. I am a recently retired soccer athlete, played 4 seasons on SFSU women's soccer team, 3-year captain of the team. Playing soccer for 19 years shaped my identity as a whole and playing for the SFSU team taught me many lessons about leadership, teamwork, community, well-being, and time management. Working at the Mashouf over the course of the past 5 years has been amazing, everyone who works there is a part of the campus recreation family. At the wellness center I enjoy the workshops, events and the collective focus on a holistic and fitness well-being for students.

I chose SF State because of how beautiful Cox Stadium is, the trees, the grass and the fog that rolls in every day from Ocean Beach. Also, I chose SFSU due to the focus/mission on social justice that the Communication Studies program offers. From freshman year till now, being almost graduated with my masters, I have met so many amazing people, created lifelong memories, and gained a wealth of knowledge about the world around me.

I just began the Dean-on-Call Graduate Assistant Program, working with Pam Su! This has been a great opportunity for me to begin to help other students and meet some new people in the Student Affairs and Enrollment Management department on campus. Also, this new program has given me the chance to extend my knowledge of the campus and its many programs/departments with students. My goals for the future are to continue networking at SFSU with my remaining semester here, as I am eager to continue working at this beautiful and diverse campus.
